The recent floods in Borno State, Nigeria, have caused extensive damage and hardship, particularly in Maiduguri. The disaster has displaced over 12,000 residents, inundated approximately 3,000 homes, and severely damaged critical infrastructure, including schools and healthcare facilities. According to the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the floods have left many families without shelter, access to clean water, or essential services.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the floods have significantly heightened the risk of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and diarrhea. With many affected communities lacking access to clean drinking water and basic hygiene supplies, the situation is dire and requires immediate intervention to prevent a full-blown humanitarian crisis.
RHEMN’s Intervention Plan
Rural Health Mission Nigeria (RHEMN) is stepping up to address the urgent needs of flood victims. Our intervention plan focuses on:
- Providing Clean Water: We will distribute water purification tablets and install temporary water systems to ensure access to safe drinking water.
- Delivering Food and Medical Aid: Emergency food packs will be provided to affected families, along with medical supplies to treat injuries and prevent disease outbreaks.
- Offering Emergency Shelter: We will supply temporary shelter materials to displaced families, helping them rebuild their homes and regain stability.
- Distributing Hygiene Kits: Essential hygiene kits, including soap and sanitizers, will be distributed to prevent the spread of diseases.
Our comprehensive response aims to stabilize the affected communities, enhance their resilience, and lay the groundwork for long-term recovery and sustainable development.
