School health services is a sub-program of “Raise a healthy child” project of Rural Health Mission Nigeria. the program targets pre-school and school children who skipped basic health services at home due to poor access or unavailability of services in the community.
RHEMN had commenced this community service at Nursery/Primary schools in Gombe LGA. The priority services include but not limited to; Deworming, vitamin A supplementation, screening and treatment of malaria, screening for genotype, hepatitis and blood group in order to detect ailments at early stage for appropriate action. A ll these are with the aim of reducing under 5 child mortality rate in Nigeria owing to the statistics recently published by UNICEF that about 2300 children under 5 die daily in Nigeria.
RHEMN had similar programs running in various communities in Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi and Taraba.
The school health team said they are working to breach the obvious gap in school health services in public and private schools. the team also included ‘almajiri’ schools within Gombe LGA.
